Patronage works like this. If I request political support, as Patron (and I may in the future), then I expect to find political support from Clients. In return these Clients will gain political representation, an intangible benefit. So Patronage is mutually beneficial. The same applies to marketing support and other types of requests, with different sets of benefits.
